5 ways to save money while shopping

For most people their grocery budget is the biggest slice of the income pie next to their mortgage or rent payment. But there are a couple of things you can do to save money on your next shopping trips.

  1. Eat before you shop. Have you ever been shopping when you're feeling hungry? Everything looks essential and it's so much easier to be spontaneous than when your stomach's full.
  2. Rotate your shopping day by 1. Let's assume you have $100 for the groceries each week. The first week go shopping on a Monday. The second wait until a Tuesday. The third a Wednesday and so on. Every 7 weeks you'll save yourself $100 and over a year that's more than $700 extra in your pocket.
  3. Buy per weight. If you were to calculate everything according to the cost per weight it gives you a good indicator of what you're paying for. For example, if banana's are $2 per kg and individual banana yoghurt's are $2 per 250ml then you're actually paying $8 per kg for the yoghurts instead of $2 for the real thing.
  4. Stay at the one shop. Specials are created to get you in the door so that you'll buy the overpriced items while you're there. If you stick with a supermarket that gives good value and prices on a regular basis you will always end up in front.
  5. Buy in bulk. Nothing new here. Most of a products cost goes on packaging so it makes sense to buy something that it is in bulk (less packaging for more product) than to buy smaller quantities.

Comments

I can certainly vouch for not going grocery shopping while you're hungry. But as the number one rule I would have said: make a list and stick to it (more or less). I also have a list which roughly reflects the layout of the supermarket I use - you are more efficient and less prone to impulse buying.

The tragedy with shopping is always that it's more expensive to buy healthy/organic, meaning that those of us with less disposable readies are more inclined to have an unhealthier (higher fat & carb etc) diet.

You're right tho - altho I don't shop much, a mars bar looks pretty damned essential at the checkout before lunch time!

In addition to not going shopping hungry, I would also suggest not going shopping stoned. You might get the munchies and buy lots of junk food, particularly pizzas which are quite expensive for what they are.
